In an update regarding the ongoing recall of pre-packaged muffins, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the recall as Class II, due to the presence of undeclared allergens.
Specifically, whey (derived from milk) and wheat flour have been detected in the muffins, potentially posing a severe health risk to individuals with allergies to these ingredients.
Class II classifications are enforced in “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote,” according to the FDA.

According to the FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education) website, symptoms of a wheat allergy reaction can range from “mild, such as hives, to severe, such as anaphylaxis. Allergic reactions can be unpredictable, and even very small amounts of wheat can cause one.” Milk allergic reactions can be very similar.
FARE advises if you have a wheat or milk allergy to “keep an epinephrine delivery device you at all times. Epinephrine is the first-line treatment for anaphylaxis.”
Newsweek reached out to FARE via email on Friday for further comment.
